Biographical History
The Austin History Center acquired Willis R. Bodine's records on the University of Texas Extended School and Community Health Education Program by donation from Nancy E. Bodine. Begun upon the invitation of the W. K. Kellogg Foundation in the mid 1940's, the program was the joint responsibility of UT's Division of Extension and Department of Physical Education. The purpose of the program was to provide in-service and pre-service training to teachers in public health education with the intention of improving public health overall in selected communities. Travis County schools were among its participants. Besides teacher training, the program included a weekly radio program ("Healthy Living in Our County") which was broadcast from UT's Radio House during school hours. A "picture story" of the radio program, which constitutes the bulk of the records, was photographed over the 1949-1950 school year by Willis R. Bodine, who was the full-time consultant to participant schools.
