The Catharine Merrill Club was founded in Indianapolis, Ind. in 1885 in honor of Catharine Merrill, the daughter of politician Samuel Merrill. She was a teacher, Civil War nurse, professor of English Literature at North Western Christian University (now Butler), and clubwoman.
