Biographical History

Willard Stewart Paul was born on February 28, 2894 in Worchester, Massachusetts. He was a student at Clark University and Dartmouth University, and received a B.S. from Johns Hopkins University in 1924. He received an M.A. from American University in 1942, and an LL.D. from American in 1958. Paul enlisted in the 1st Colorado Field Artillery in 1916, and was commissioned a lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1917, at the start of World War I. He was a professor of military science and tactics at Johns Hopkins University from 1921 to 1924, until he received his degree in 1924. He served with the 27th Infantry in Hawaii from 1924 to 1928, and was an instructor at the Infantry School from 1930 to 1933. He graduated from the Command and General Staff School in 1935, served as assistant professor of military science and tactics at Culver Academy from 1935 to 1936, and graduated from the Army War College in 1937. He served with the Adjutant General Department from 1937 to 1941, the GHQ U.S. Army from 1941 to 1942, and GHQ Army Ground Forces from 1942 to 1943. He served as commanding general of the 75th and 26th Infantry Divisions from 1943 to 1945. After the war, Paul served as Assistant Chief of Staff (G-1) and retired from the army in December 1948 as a Lieutenant General. Following his retirement he was a consultant to the American National Red Cross, 1948 to 1950; a consultant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Manpower; assistant to the Director of Defense Mobilization, Arthur S. Flemming, from 1954 to 1956; and a member of a special subcommittee of the Hoover Commission that studied personnel problems of the Defense Department, 1955 to 1956. In 1956 he became president of Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania, from which he retired in 1961. He died on March 21, 1966.
