Biographical History
Missionary.
Missionary and son of the missionary John Sergeant (1710-1749). Born in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, Sergeant was ordained as a minister of the Congregational church, and in 1775 took charge of the Indian part of the Stockbridge, Massachusetts, congregation. When they removed to New Stockbridge, Oneida County, New York, during the mid-1780s, he followed them and remained with them until his death in 1824.
Missionary to the Stockbridge Indians.
Supported by the Society in Scotland for Propagating Christian Knowledge, Sergeant in 1775 began his ministry at the Stockbridge, Mass., mission founded by his father (John Sergeant, 1710-1749). When the Stockbridge Indians relocated among the Oneidas at New Stockbridge, N.Y., Sergeant continued his work there. He later attempted to assist the tribe in their aborted 1818 move to the White River in Ohio and in their removal to the Fox River near Green Bay, Wisc., beginning in 1822.
