Biographical History

In 1849, New York businessman William Bayard went before Congress and proposed a railroad route to carry the U.S. Mail as well as passengers. In 1856, he proposed a stagecoach route from Missouri to California for the same purposes. Bayard's proposals comment not only on the practical details of his transportation schemes but the significance of his ventures in binding the Union together.
