Biographical History

Caroline Baer Rose was born in Wheeling, West Virginia in 1913. She graduated from West Virginia University, and received her master's degree from the University of Chicago. She began teaching sociology at the University of Minnesota in 1952; her career there spanned twenty-three years.

Caroline Baer Rose married Arnold Rose in 1943. He also was on the faculty of the Sociology Department at the University of Minnesota, as well as serving as 41st district representative to the Minnesota State Legislature from 1963-1965. Arnold Rose died in 1968 of cancer at the age of 49.

Caroline and Arnold Rose co-wrote several books including A Minority Problem and Sociology: The study of Human Relations . They also worked on An American Dilemma: the Negro Problem and Modern Democracy, by Gunnar Myrdal. Separately, she authored Sociology: The Study of Man and The Study of Sociology, as well as numerous papers and published articles on minority group problems and social psychology.

Caroline Rose was also active in Minnesota politics for 25 years, and took an active interest in the women's liberation movement; when she died she was president of the Council for University Women's Progress and past president of the Midwest Sociological Society.

Caroline Rose died of cancer on 25 March 1975 at the age of 61.
