Biographical History

Stewart Bruce Terry was born near Kossuth, Iowa on 1 June 1843. He was educated for the ministry but instead became a successful civil and criminal lawyer. He served with the 4th Iowa Cavalry Volunteers during the Civil War and was wounded at Vicksburg, becoming a prisoner for eleven months at the Confederate prison of Cahaba, Alabama. After the end of the war, Terry married Electa Jane Bennett at Winfield, Iowa in 1866. Six years later he moved with his wife to Kansas, settling near Lyons, Rice County. The family later moved to Lee's Summit and then the Kansas City area. They finally moved to the Morse community not far from Olathe in 1910 to take up farming, after Terry had gone deaf and could no longer practice law. Stewart and Electa had three children who survived to adulthood. Stewart Bruce Terry died at home near Olathe and Morse on 21 August 1924 at the age of 81. Mrs. Electa Terry died over twenty years later in 1948.
