Biographical History
"Work, Henry Clay (1 Oct. 1832-8 June 1884), songwriter, was born in Middletown, Connecticut, the son of Alanson Work and Aurelia (maiden name unknown)... He married Sarah Parker in January 1857, and they had four children. He continued to write popular songs suitable for either the parlor or the minstrel show stage... Work was most productive from 1861 to 1866, and many of the songs for which he was known were composed then. Although he published songs regularly from 1866 to 1869, they approached in neither number nor quality those of earlier in the decade... Work died of heart disease while visiting his mother in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1884."-- "Henry Clay Work." American National Biography Online. http://www.anb.org (Retrieved February 5, 2009)
