Biographical History
Earl Lemley Core was an American botanist and professor at at West Virginia University. He was chairman of the Biology Department from 1948-66, and curator of the Herbarium from 1934-72. He founded the Southern Appalachian Botanical Club in 1936. Lemley was known for his co-authorship of textbooks on general biology, manuals for the biology laboratory, and taxonomy of plants. He is also known his research and publications in collaboration with P. D. Strausbaugh on the flora of West Virginia, and his botanical writings for the Charleston Gazette entitled "The Wondrous Year". Lemley collected specimens as a part of the Colombia Cinchona Mission in the Andes from 1943-45.
