Biographical History
Harry Lumsden was born 13th July 1866 in Irvine, Ayrshire. His father, Alexander Lumsden, was a teacher. Harry Lumsden studied at Glasgow University between 1885 and 1899. Between 1885-1886, he studied Humanity, Greek, and Mathematics; 1889-1888, Logic and Mathematics; 1888-1889, Moral Philosophy, English Literature, and Mathematics; 1890-1891, Scots Law and Public Law; 1889-1890, Natural Philosophy, 1893-1899, Civil Law, Law of Scotland, Conveyancing, Constitutional Law and History, Medical Jurisprudence, and Public Law. He graduated MA in 1891, and LL.B in 1899. Throughout this time, he won four prizes - the junior class prize for Greek and the junior class prize for Humanity, 1886-1887; the class prize for Middle Greek, 1887-1888; and the class prize for Constitutional Law, 1895-1896. He was later awarded an honorary doctrate in 1933.
While still studying, Lumsden was appointed Clerk to the Trades House of Glasgow. Following his graduation, he was a partner in the law firm of Biggar and Lumsden.
Lumsden joined the Hammersmith Craft on Irvine in 1897, becoming a member of the master court in 1906, and an office bearer.
He wrote many historical works including History of the Hammermen in Glasgow, The Skinners and Glovers of Glasgow , and Bibliography of the Fourteen Trades of Glasgow . He died in 1939.
