Mathematician. Michell was Lecturer in Mathematics, University of Melbourne, Australia from 1891 and then Professor 1923-1928. During the period 1890-1902 he published his researches in the theory of hydrodynamics and elasticity and became a world leader in the field.

Michell (1863-1940) was born at Maldon, Victoria. He graduated B.A. from Melbourne in 1884, and studied the Mathematical Tripos at Cambridge 1884-1890, being elected Fellow of Trinity College in 1890. 1892-1923 lecturer in Mathematics and 1923-1928 Professor of Mathematics at the University of Melbourne. He published articles mainly relating to engineering problems, and also The Elements of Mathematics (1937 with M.H. Belz).
