Biographical History

Charles Francis Hunter received a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences degree from Southeast Missouri State College, a Master of Philosophy degree from the University of Wisconsin, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Cornell University. Hunter came to Northwestern in 1947 from the University of Missouri.

After serving as Assistant Professor of Radio (1947-1952), Assistant Professor of Radio and Television (1952-1956), and Associate Professor of Radio and Television (1956-1959) he became Professor of Radio and Television in 1959. Hunter was also appointed Professor of Education in 1963, and held both appointments until his death in Chicago on November 18, 1975. He became Chairman of the Department of Radio, Television, and Film in 1958 and served in this position until his death. He also served as faculty sponsor for station WNUR from 1955 to 1975.

Minority students received special attention from Hunter during their academic and professional careers. Hunter was one of the producers of NBC's “Live and Learn” from 1952 to 1964. This won the Ohio State University award as “Best Educational TV Program” in 1956.
