Biographical History
John Smith Kendall was an academic author and professor of Spanish at Tulane University. He also worked as a journalist with the New Orleans Picayune newspaper, and as a war correspondent to Cuba and Nicaragua.. He wrote primarily historical works about New Orleans, but also was a poet. John S. Kendall married Isoline Rodd; their children, Elizabeth and Lane, were born in 1910 and 1912.
John Irwin Kendall served with the Fourth Louisiana Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. After the war he lived and worked primarily in Mexico, first as the representative of a New Orleans sewing machine company, then representing several Mexican railroads and an American oil company in Mazatlan. His son, John Smith Kendall, was a New Orleans journalist, war correspondent, university professor of Spanish, and historian.
