Biographical History

Martin Baker was born about 1886 in Lille Hammer, Norway. He came to the United States in 1903. After working for a telephone company and railroad in St. Paul, MN, he moved to Seattle, WA in 1909 to work for a commercial photographer. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War I. Baker became a pioneer in medical photography when he became Seattle's first medical photographer when he joined the staff of the King County Hospital (now Harborview) in 1931. In 1942, he established the Virginia Mason Hospital medical photograph department which he headed for 14 years before he retired. In October 1981 Martin Baker passed away in Seattle, WA.
