Biographical History
Samuel Mather (age 5) came to southwestern Cedar County near West Branch in 1851 with his family. The Mather farmstead later became known as The Evergreens after the grove of pines Samuel and his father (Samuel Sr.) planted on the property. After his parents' divorce, Samuel remained on the farm, assisting his mother and paying for the business ventures and education of his siblings. In 1878 he married Ellen Knudson. The couple had 6 children, including Rachel (their eldest child) and Anders. The Mather family followed the Quaker faith and labored hard for generations to develop and retain their land.
