Biographical History

William Stanton, Ohio physician, lawyer, and legislator, son of Dr. Benjamin Stanton and cousin of Edwin McMasters Stanton. He began his professional life as a civil engineer in 1851. After about three years, he turned to the study of medicine, and in 1856 graduated at the Miami Medical College, at Cincinnati. Three years later, however, he turned his attention to the study of law; in 1859 he graduated from the Cincinnati Law School in 1859 and practiced law in Cincinnati. He represented Hamilton County in the Ohio legislature from 1862 to 1868. In 1875 he retired and moved to first to Pennsylvania and in 1888 to Pasadena, Calif.

His father Benjamin Stanton (1793-1861) was a known Ohio Quaker (Hicksite), physician, and abolitionist. A native of Carteret County, North Carolina, he moved to Ohio in the early 1800. Having studied medicine at Mount Pleasant, he settled in Salem, Columbiana County, Ohio where he set up a practice.
