Biographical History
Born in Ireland, Peter John Sullivan emigrated to the U.S. with his parents as a child. After military service during the Mexican War, he served as one of the official stenographers in the Senate. Later he practiced law in Cincinnati, Oh. During the U.S. Civil War, he organized several volunteer regiments and served as colonel of the 48th Ohio regiment. On 13 March, 1865, he was brevetted brigader-general of volunteers. Soon after he was appointed U.S. Minister to Colombia, an office he held until 1869.
