Biographical History

Washington University's Health Administration Program (HAP) was established in 1946 under the guidance of Frank R. Bradley, M.D. Dr. Bradley was the director of Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, and he wanted a graduate program that would be connected with the School of Medicine that was designed to prepare individuals for hospital management. The program graduated its first class of nine Master degree candidates in 1948. Also in 1948, HAP became a charter member of the newly-formed Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA). As one of the country's seven pioneering programs, the program at Washington University was one of the few health administration programs to be housed within a medical school. The relationship between HAP and the School of Medicine provided an exceptional learning environment and offered a unique opportunity for the integration of management and medicine. HAP was continuosly accredited since 1968, the year that the Accrediting Commission on Education in Health Services Administration (ACEHSA) was established. After educating students for more than sixty years, the program closed in 2008. Provenance After the Health Administration Program closed in May 2008, the records in this collection were transferred to the Becker Library Archives on June 17, 2008.
