Pennsylvania lawyer, judge, member of the U.S. House of Representatives (known for the Wilmot Proviso), and, at the time he wrote these letters, U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania.
Wilmot served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives (1845-1851), a judge of the 13th Pennsylvania judicial district (1851-1861), a member of the U.S Senate (1861-1863), and a judge of the U.S. Court of Claims (1861-1868).
