Soldier and miner in California and New Mexico.
John K. Houston served in the California Volunteers (1861-1866) with the Union Army during the Civil War. He enlisted on October 28, 1861 in Company H, 5th California Infantry that was raised by Captain Sylvester Soper in Placerville, California. Houston became Sergeant and later Officer in Company H, 5th Regiment of Infantry, California Volunteers (1861-1863), 2nd Lieutenant in Company C, 5th Regiment of Infantry, California Volunteers (1863), 2nd and 1st Lieutenant in Company G, 1st Battalion of Veteran Infantry, California Volunteers (1863-1866), and 1st Lieutenant in Company B, 1st Battalion of Veteran Infantry, California Volunteers (1866). He remained in New Mexico following his service in the California Volunteers.
