Biographical History
Clarence McKenzie Lewis (1876-1959) was a trustee of the New York Botanical Garden and a collector of plants from around the world. His home Skylands, was named the official botanical garden of New Jersey. In 1953 he donated a collection of 1177 bound volumes, 439 unbound volumes and over 1000 periodicals and a like number of reprints and bulletins to the New York Botanical Garden Library. He graduated from Columbia with a degree in engineering but eventually went into investment banking. He bought Skylands in 1922. He built a house designed by John Russell Pope. The Gardens were designed by Feruccio Vitale and Alfred Geiffert. It was purchased by the State of N.J. in 1966 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
