Biographical History

The Central of Georgia Railway, formed from its predecessor, The Central Rail Road and Banking Company of Georgia in 1895 was a dominant force in the economic life of Georgia and parts of Alabama through the mid-twentieth century. Through its many branch and subsidiary lines, land holding companies, and agricultural experimentation, it controlled much of the region's transportation and was a strong influence in the rural development of the area.

(Cont.) The Wadley Southern Railway Company was incorporated in 1906 as the result of the Central of Georgia Railway merger of the Wadley and Mount Vernon Railroad and the Stillmore Air Line Railway, two of the Central's subsidiary lines. The lines originally ran 90 miles, joining at Creek Junction, Georgia just south of Wadley, Georgia. By 1930, all but 20 miles of the Wadley to Statesboro route track had been abandoned or taken up. This route was run as a short line of the Central of Georgia Railway until 1962 when the Company was sold and shortly thereafter dissolved.
