Pease, Arthur Stanley, 1881-1964

Arthur Stanley Pease (1881-1964) was a classics professor at the University of Illinois, Amherst, and Harvard. From 1927 to 1932 he was president of Amherst College. He was also an amateur botanist.

Arthur Stanley Pease was a classical scholar who was also an avid amateur botanist. Born in 1881, he received his AB, AM and PhD degrees in classics from Harvard in 1902, 1903 and 1905 respectively. He taught classics at Harvard from 1906-1909, at the University of Illinois from 1909-1924, and at Amherst College from 1924-1927. In 1927 he was appointed president of Amherst College. He resigned five years later and returned to teaching classics at Harvard, from 1932 to 1950. He died Jan. 7, 1964.

Pease earned his Harvard AB in 1902, his Harvard AM in 1903, and his Harvard PhD in 1905.

Pease (1881-1964) graduated from Harvard and taught Latin and Greek at Harvard.

Pease (1881-1965) was educated at Harvard University (A.B. 1902, A.M. 1903 and Ph. D. 1905). He taught classics at Harvard, 1906-1909; University of Illinois, 1909-1924; and Amherst College, 1924-1927. He was appointed President of Amherst in 1927. He returned to teaching classics at Harvard, 1932-1950. He was also an amateur field botanist, who published several botanical works, and in 1912 donated his herbarium of 12,000 sheets to the Gray Herbarium and the New England Botanical Club.

Frederick Tuckerman, M.D. (b. 1857), a native of Greenfield, Mass., was graduated from Boston University in 1878 and Harvard Medical School in 1882. He was Lecturer on Anatomy and Physiology at Massachusetts Agricultural College, 1884-1886. He was the author of numerous scientific articles as well as Amherst Academy: a New England School of the Past, 1814-1861 (1929). He was the son of the poet Frederick Goddard Tuckerman and nephew of Professor Edward Tuckerman.
