Biographical History
Preston Ercelle Cloud, Jr. studied the history of Earth's atmosphere, oceans, and crust. During his career he was on the faculty at the University of Minnesota, University of California at Los Angeles, and University of California at Santa Barbara.
Preston Cloud was born in 1912 and educated at George Washington and Yale Universities. He worked for many years with the U.S. Geological Survey and taught at Harvard, the University of Minnesota, Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, UCLA, and the university of California Santa Barbara.
He was internationally renowned for his work in paleontology, geology, biogeology, and environmental studies, and was the recipient of many awards, including the 1976 Penrose Medalist of the Geological Society of America. He died in 1991.
