Biographical History

Josiah Edward Spurr, a geologist, graduated from Harvard in 1893. He was a field assistant with the Geological and Natural History Survey of Minnesota, where he did the first rough geologic maps of the Mesabi Iron Range (1893-1894). From 1894-1896, 1898-1900, and 1902-1906, he worked for the United States Geological Survey in Colorado, Alaska, California, Nevada, and Washington. In 1906, Spurr became chief geologist for American Smelting and Refining Company, and in 1912 became vice president of Tonopah Mining Company, a position he held until 1917. Spurr established a geologic consulting firm, Spurr and Cox, Inc. (later Spurr and Company) in 1908, with offices in New York, Denver, Salt Lake City, El Paso, Texas, and Mexico City. In 1918, Spurr became editor of Engineering and Mining Journal, and in 1930, professor of geology at Rollins College in Florida.
