Biographical History

Reginald Ely Zelnik (b. May 8, 1936, d. May 17, 2004) was born in New York City. He graduated from Princeton University in 1956. After a tour of duty in the U.S. Navy, he received his M.A. (1961) and Ph.D. (1966) from Stanford University. He taught briefly at Indiana University before joining the history faculty at U.C. Berkeley in 1964, where he was active in the Free Speech Movement. He taught courses in imperial and modern Russian history. He died in Berkeley.
