Biographical History

The La Crosse Weather Station was organized in 1872 as part of the National Weather Service, which was established in 1870 under the Army Signal Service. In 1891, the National Weather Service was assigned to the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture; at this time the name was changed to Weather Bureau. In 1940, the Weather Bureau was transferred to the U.S. Dept. of Commerce. The Weather Bureau was renamed the National Weather Service in 1970, and was transferred to the newly-created National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration within the Dept. of Commerce.
