Biographical History

Lane, 1864-1921, born in Canada and lived in California where he practiced law in San Francisco; he was United States Secretary of the Interior from 1913-1920.

In 1917, Brown became Special Assistant to Secretary of the Interior, Franklin K. Lane, and worked with him until November 1918, when he enlisted in the Army. After the war, Brown returned to Washington and acted as Joint Secretary for the Industrial Conference of 1919, organized by President Wilson. He remained active in Democratic party matters, serving as a delegate to the nominating conventions of 1920, 1924 and 1936. From 1928 to 1932, Brown was a graduate student at the Harvard School of Public Administration, with a focus on monetary policy.

Franklin K. Lane was a Democratic politician from California who served as Secretary of the Interior from 1913 to 1920.
