Biographical History
The Memphis, Holly Springs, Okalona and Selma Railroad Company was incorporated in 1868, and was organized in 1868 Nov. in meetings at Okalona, Chickasaw Co., Miss. over a period of several days. During that time, L.E. Houston was named chairman of the board, W.B.Forrest and W.R. Moon were elected as president and vice-president, respectively, S.J. Gholson became secretary, and both J.D. Winston and B.R. Walker became assistant secretaries. Other members of the board included John C. Fizer, I.W. Page, Jr., W.W. White, C.L. Stewart, H.W. Walter, R.A. Murdock, W.W. Troup, and G.A. Sykes. Meetings were held not only in Okalona, but also in Memphis, Shelby Co., Tenn., and Columbus, Miss. The idea behind the formation of the railroad was to connect Ala. and Miss. with the southern terminus of the Southern Pacific Railroad Co. at Memphis.
