Biographical History
Chicago lead manufacturer, Newberry Library founding trustee, and Christian social activist Eliphalet Wickes Blatchford, and his family.
Early Chicago manufacturer, executor of the Walter L. Newberry estate, and first President of the Newberry Library Board of Trustees, 1892-1914.
Moving to Chicago in 1853, Blatchford quickly became active in the religious and intellectual life of the growing city. In 1868, Blatchford was appointed co-executor of the Newberry estate, which he managed along with William H. Bradley for almost twenty years before starting the Newberry Library in compliance with the contingent provision in Newberry's will. Blatchford dedicated himself to the success of the Library and for over two decades actively superintended its day-to-day operations.
