Biographical History

Catherine Small Long was born in Dayton, Ohio, on February 7, 1924. She served in the U.S. Navy as a pharmacist mate from 1944 to 1946, and earned a B.A. from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La., in 1948. At LSU she met and married Gillis W. Long (U.S. Representative for Louisiana District 8, 1963-1965, 1973-1985) in 1947. In 1985, Long was elected by special election to fill the vacancy caused by her husband's death during the Ninety-ninth Congress. In addition to being the first woman veteran to serve in Congress, she was also the seventh member of the Long family to be elected to Congress. She served as a U.S. Representative from 1985 to 1987.
