Gustav Adolf Deissmann was a prominent German theologian and scholar. He earned his D.Theol. at Marburg and his D.D. at Aberdeen, St. Andrew's, Manchester. Deissmann was a professor of Theology at the University of Berlin and wrote numerous scholarly works. Those of his writings that are available in English include Bible studies: contributions, chiefly from papyri and inscriptions, to the history of the language, the literature, and the religion of Hellenistic Judaism and primitive Christianity; Light from the ancient East: the New Testament illustrated by recently discovered texts of the Graeco-Roman world; The religion of Jesus and the faith of Paul; Paul, a study in social and religious history; and The New Testament in the light of modern research.
