Biographical History
The North Carolina State University Music Department has the mission to provide educational and performance opportunities for student and community participants through a variety of musical experiences and academic courses. It also serves as a cultural resource for the university and the greater community through performances and presentation offered by NCSU students, student and community groups, and by University faculty.
Founded in 1918 by Percy “Daddy” Price, the NCSU Music Department offers a variety of courses which may be taken to fulfill general education requirements or to apply to a minor in Music. The Music minor curriculum offers undergraduate students the opportunity to seriously study music, with concentrations in Performance, History, Liberal Arts, and Composition.
The NCSU Music Department also administers the University’s music performance organization, including its concert bands, athletic bands, choral ensembles, orchestras, and the Jazz Ensemble. They are located on campus at the Price Music Center and Broughton Hall.
The Music Department has also cooperated with the Raleigh Chamber Music Guild, a local organization which promotes and performs chamber music, and whose records can also be found within this collection.
