Moncure Daniel Conway was an author, minister, and social reformer. Born in Virginia, he abandoned his law studies to enter the Methodist ministry; influenced by Quakers, he left the Methodist ministry for Harvard Divinity School. He preached all over the United States, including on controversial topics such as abolition. Throughout his life, he contributed articles to numerous periodicals and newspapers.

He is the author of a Life of Thomas Paine along with seventy other books and pamphlets.
