Col. Robert Patterson (1753-1827) was one of the founders of Lexington, Ky. He moved to the Dayton area in 1804. A veteran of the Revolutionary War, Col. Patterson continued his military career on the frontier, serving with such legendary figures as George Rogers Clark, Anthony Wayne, and Daniel Boone. Patterson was commissioned as a quartermaster during the War of 1812. In Dayton, patterson farmed and operated a lumber mill with his son, Jefferson Patterson (1801-1863). Jefferson's marriage to Julia Johnston (1811-1897) united two of Ohio's pioneer families. Julia was the daughter of Col. John Johnston (1775-1861) who was an Indian agent in Piqua, Ohio. Two of Jefferson and Julia's sons, John H. Patterson (1844-1922) and Frank J. Patterson (1849-1901) founded the National Cash Register Company in Dayton in 1884. As President of NCR, Patterson, revolutionized marketing and business practices and took an active role in local civic affairs.
