Biographical History

The Massachusetts State Capitol, usually called the State House, was designed by Charles Bulfinch was begun in 1795, the cornerstone being laid on July 4 of that year in a special ceremony which included Paul Revere. The first addition to the original State House, made in 1831, was designed by Isaiah Rogers. A second addition, made 1853-1856 and designed by Gridley James Fox Bryant, completely enclosed the 1831 addition. This second addition provided room for a state library and for other state government offices. Both of the earlier additions were removed to make room for a third addition, constructed 1889-1895.
