The University of New Mexico Alumni Association was originally formed in 1897, and reorganized in 1927. According to the Alumni publication, Alumni news, the organization's purpose was to "help the University." The proposed ways to do this was by recruiting new students; assist in procuring scholarships and other tuition assistance; aid in obtaining legislative appropriations for the University; and support University athletics
