Biographical History

Teacher, social worker, and community volunteer, McCane was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, March 1, 1906 and studied at Radcliffe College (A.B. 1927) and Catholic University of America (M.S.S.W. 1941). She taught in several southern black institutions, and worked as a probation officer for the Juvenile court in Washington, D.C. (1942-1949) and case-worker for the Veteran's Administration, (1949-1952). She was administrator for the National Training School for Girls, 1952-1953, and the Barrett School for Girls, 1953-1956. She was a member of many women's organizations in Washington D.C. and a volunteer in the program at International House that welcomed foreign visitors.
