Biographical History
Radical professor; socialist; pacifist during World War I era; author and lecturer; leader of "back-to-the-earth" movement.
American sociologist.
Scott Nearing began his career as a teacher of economics. For many years he was blacklisted by universities and mainstream publishers for his socialist and pacifist ideas, especially his advocacy of draft resistance during World War I. From 1932 until his death in 1983, Nearing was a self-subsistent farmer, author and lecturer.
Nearing was interviewed July 11, 1969 at his farm in Harborside, Maine.
