Biographical History

John James McCook was born on February 2, 1843, in New Lisbon, Ohio, and spent his childhood in Steubenville, Ohio. From 1858-1860 he was a student at Jefferson College in Cannonsburg, Pennsylvania. During the Civil War, McCook served in the Union army, entering as a private and quickly rising to the rank of second lieutenant. Following his enlistment, he enrolled at Trinity College in Hartford, graduating in 1863. McCook prepared for the ministry at the Berkeley Divinity School in Middletown and was ordained in 1866. He spent most of his clerical career associated with St. John's parish in East Hartford. In 1883, McCook joined the faculty of Trinity College. He became interested in sociological investigations and studied and wrote about poor law administration, venal voting, alchoholism, and, most extensively, tramps as a social group. McCook retired from Trinity in 1923 and died on January 9, 1927 in Hartford.
