Philip Lamothe Snell Chauncy, sketcher, amateur photographer and surveyor, was born 21 June 1816 in England at Datchet, Bucks. He arrived in South Australia in 1839, went to Swan River, and was appointed assistant Surveyor at Perth in 1841. In 1853, he went to Victoria, and was appointed District Surveyor of Heathcote. In 1861, he was transferred to Dunnolly as District Surveyor. He was a major contributor to R. Brough Smyth's "Aborigines of Victoria" (1878)
Philip Lamothe Snell Chauncy (1816-1880) received his articles of surveying in 1839. He was Assistant Surveyor in Western Australia (1841-1853) before moving to Victoria where he was briefly a land surveyor and commission agent in Melbourne before joining the Public Service. He was appointed initially as surveyor-in-charge of the McIvor district and subsequently as surveyor of Echuca (1854), surveyor-in-charge of the Dunolly Survey District (1860) of the Castlemaine Survey District 1867 and finally of the Ballarat Survey District. He was chief contributor to R. Brough Smyth's Aborigines of Victoria (1878).
P. L. S. Chauncy was Assistant Surveyor in Western Australia, 1841-1853 and subsequent to his move to Victoria was Surveyor at McIvor; Echuca; Dunolly, 1860; Castlemaine, 1867 and Ballarat. He was a major contributor to R. Brough Smyth's Aborigines of Victoria published in 1878.
