Biographical History

Feenberg (1906-1977). Physicist (quantum theory, nuclear physics). A member of the National Academy of Sciences, Professor Feenberg was a member of the Washington University Physics faculty from 1946 to 1977. Prior to coming to Washington University he held positions at Harvard, the University of Wisconsin, and Washington Square College of New York University; and on the staff at Sperry Gyroscope Co. (1942-1946). From 1936 to 1938, Feenberg held a fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study. His pioneering work in many-body theory resulted in the establishment of an annual award, the Feenberg Medal, given by the International Society for Many-Body Problems. The first Feenberg Medal was awarded in 1987. In 1984, the Eugene Feenberg Memorial Lecture was established at Washington University. Feenberg lectures have included John Bardeen, Eugene P. Wigner, David Pines, John A. Wheeler, and Walter E. Massey.
