Troxell, Barbara

Barbara Troxell was born in Easton, Pennsylvania on 16 September 1916. After graduating from Penn State in 1937, she taught voice and piano, completing her master's degree in music education in 1939. She then won a scholarship to the Curtis Institute of Music to study with Madame Elizabeth Schumann, and received the Lucius Pryor Award for 1944-1945. She performed as guest artist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, as a soloist with the Dessoff Choirs, and with the National Orchestral Association. These were followed by radio appearances, prize-winning recordings, and world tours; she made her debut with the Metropolitan Opera in 1950. Following her debut season with the Met, she performed with conductor Sir Thomas Beecham at the Mexico City and Montreal Festivals, and recorded numerous albums and continued to teach. She was named Penn State Woman of the Year in 1962. Ms. Troxell died in September 1984.
