Biographical History

George Beale Sloan was a native and life-long resident of Oswego, New York. He attended local schools and became knowledgable in the dry goods business. In the 1850's, he ventured into the milling and transportation business. His first attempt to start a business failed, but his second attempt brought a successful partnership with Cheney Ames. During the 1860's, he became a grain commission merchant and built the Northwestern Elevators. By the 1870's, he had diversified his investments and helped form the Oswego Shade Company and later became president of the Second National Bank of Oswego. He also served as a State Assemblyman in 1874 and as a State Senator from 1886 to 1892.
