Lee was born on May 4, 1850 in East Groveland, NY; studied law in his uncle's law office in Holly Springs, MS; admitted to the Mississippi bar in 1871, becoming the asst. US district attorney for the northern district of MS in the same year; moved to Los Angeles in 1879, where he practiced law with his two sons; served as attorney for executor and estate of E.J. (Lucky) Baldwin, who died in 1909; served as general counsel for the Murphy Oil Co.; declined appointment as judge of the LA county superior court in 1895; was chairman of the Republican county central committee for LA county, 1896-1910, and a member of the executive committee of the Republican State Central Committee, 1902-04; served as president of the California State Bar Assn., 1919-1920; he died on Apr. 28, 1925.
