Biographical History
Born on August 14, 1871, in Chicago, Illinois; died June 6, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois. Historian, professor, researcher. Garraghan received his elementary schooling at Foster School in Chicago from 1878 to 1882, following which he attended St. Ignatius High School and St. Ignatius College, from which he received his A.B. in 1889. He entered the Society of Jesus at Florissant, Missouri, on September 1, 1890 and from 1893 to 1896 he studied philosophy at St. Louis University. From 1896 to 1901 he taught at St. Xavier College in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1901 Garraghan returned to the St. Louis University School of Divinity and was ordained in 1904. After serving as a lecturer at Creighton University and an instructor at the Jesuit seminary at Florrissant, he served as an assistant to the provincials (socius) of the Missouri Province of the Society of Jesus, during which time he attained a doctorate in history from St. Louis University. From 1925 to 1932 Garraghan taught in the Graduate School of St. Louis University and served as the head of the History Department. In 1932 he was assigned to Loyola University Chicago as a professor of history in research. As Loyola he was associated with the Institute of Jesuit History and served as the editor of "Mid-America" from 1929 to 1933. He is best known for his books "Jesuits of the Middle United States", published in 1938, and "Catholic Church in Chicago", published in 1921. Garraghan passed away on June 6, 1942, at Loyola University Chicago.
