Biographical History
The New Orleans, the first steamboat to navigate western waters, sailed from Pittsburgh bound for New Orleans in 1811. Built by Nicholas Roosevelt and backed by steamship builder Robert Fulton, the New Orleans proved that steam powered vessels could navigate the western waters. In 1911, the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania coordinated the building and subsequent sailing of a replica of New Orleanss, whose launching on November 1 was witnessed by President William Taft.
