William Higby came to California in 1850. He was District Attorney of Calaveras County, served as State Senator and served three terms in Congress.
Biography
William Higby was born in New York August 18, 1813. He was a lawyer by profession, coming to California in 1850. He practiced law in San Francisco, then mined for gold at Mokelumne Hill. He was elected District Attorney of Calaveras County (1843-59) and was later elected to the State Senate (1863). In 1863, Higby was elected to Congress serving three terms (1863-68). In 1877, he became Internal Revenue Collector for California. He died at Santa Rosa, California, November 26, 1887.
