Biographical History
Charles Hoffman Pottenger (b. 1911, Oklahoma City, Okla.), U.S. Air Force officer, graduated from West Point in 1933 and received pilot wings the following year. His early assignments included with the 72nd Bomb Squadron in Hawaii, and five years of flying training in the U.S. In 1942 he joined the 12th Air Force in North Africa, and in 1944 became assistant chief of staff for operations and director of operations for the Mediterranean Allied Tactical Air Force in Italy. Following the War, he served as chief, European Branch, Plans and Operations, War Department General Staff, then air attaché to Switzerland in 1947. During the 1950s, General Pottenger was deputy Air Force member of the Joint Strategic Plans Committee, and chief of the War Plans Division. In 1956 he was assigned to Far East Air Force HQ, and assumed command of the 315th Air Division in Japan in 1957. He retired in 1964.
