Biographical History
Dr. Venila Shores, born in 1893, taught at Florida State College for Women (FSCW) from 1924 to 1957. In 1922, she moved to Tallahassee from Jacksonville, Florida and helped set up the high school division of FSCW 's demonstration school. Joining the history faculty in 1924, she organized and was the instructor of the first college course in Florida history. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, she helped organize the Alpha of Florida chapter at FSCW, the first Phi Beta Kappa chapter in Florida. In 1941, Shores became the head of FSCW's History, Geography, and Political Science Departments, succeeding Dr. Kathryn T. Abbey. In 1954, she resigned from Florida State University's (FSU) history department, and retired from the FSU faculty in 1957. She died in 1980.
